Avengers Watch

Splashpage.com recently had an article in which Zak Penn, screenwriter of The Avengers (2012), tried to warn fans that the movie might not meet their expectations. In his words, "It might suck." I'm trying to remember, but I can't recall a writer being that blunt about a major project he's working on. I can understand the need to sometimes throw a little cold water on the overheated hopes of rabid fandom...but "suck"? That's a first.

Actually, it might be a smart strategy given the task he and the makers of the other Avengers-related films have in front of them. It has to be daunting to pull together so many important, but disparate, characters into one film and not have any of them relegated to mere window dressing. But, as Penn also says in the article, no company is better suited to produce a cool multi-movie project like The Avengers than Marvel Studios. The reasons being that just about all the major players involved are very close to the source material and Marvel has complete control over how the characters are portrayed.
Even though Penn is just starting The Avengers script, the signs are pointing toward a series of superhero movies from Marvel that might set new standards of coolness for the genre. As usual, for me, the speculation on what these flicks are going to look like is almost as much fun as the final product.
